Legend has it that FLC were formed in 1993 in New York City when Huey took a job at the infamous Limelight Club. Fast was already working there, and Steve was apparently “hanging out”. After a while, they became room mates and raided Steve’s classic rock collection for samples and ideas and began writing songs together.

Apparently they filled in at the Limelight if bands who were scheduled to perform cancelled because they were already “on the clocks” and were cheap labour! They had done this only 6 times when the head of A&R for EMI was in the house and spotted them. They were given 2 weeks of studio time to record an album, but apparently finished the recording in only 3 days and spent the rest of their time in the studio partying and running up a huge bill – a sign of things to come!

A year later, Come Find Yourself was released, and they found themselves with a hit on their hands with Scooby Snacks due, in part, to their canny use of samples from Quentin Tarantino’s hit film Pulp Fiction. However, this led to a bit of a contretemps with Tarantino and Huey professing to be “looking out for him” wherever they went as they felt they had a bit of a score to settle!

Although America never seemed to really “get” FLC, the UK and most of Europe really took the band to their hearts. FLC, despite being from New York, always seemed to understand and tap into a uniquely European, and especially British, sense of humour.

They have toured extensively over the years and although FLC have consistently released excellent albums, anyone who knows them, knows the best way to experience their music is in a live setting. They are consummate musicians and connect with their audience in a unique way. They are warm and funny and clearly love performing live – and what is more, they go the extra mile to ensure that their audience love it too.

FLC have had a bit of a “Spinal Tap” reputation when it comes to drummers – although so far, there have been no spontaneous combustions or bizarre gardening accidents that we are aware of. Steve-O (Steve Borovini) left after 100% Columbian to be replaced by Mackie (Maxwell Jayson). Their current drummer who joined in 2003, is the very talented Frank ‘the Rhythm Man’ (Mark Reid – AKA Uncle Frank) from the Leicester Massive who, according to one journalist “gives FLC the kind of thrust that NASA would be jealous of” – and they have a point!

Frank also has several other musical side-projects. Forming one-half of the ‘Make It Nice Brothers‘, along with Naim Cortazzi, to front bands Uncle Frank and Fatal Star (links on this site). He still takes time out when he can to sing with his former band mates Cantaloop, and occasionally plays drums for other artists such as Merz. How he finds the time we’ll never know!

Frank and Fast also have another side project. 'Radio Riddler' is their reggae DJ/performance/production project - creating their own music and remixing for other artists. Fast also has his own work as a DJ and music producer.

Huey has been the media’s darling throughout FLC’s career, having written a wine column for Mondo magazine, and appearing as a guest panellist several times on Never Mind the Buzzcocks. He has also stood in as compère on the same show. He appeared on BBC’s The Underdog Show, and more recently on Jack Osbourne’s ‘Adrenaline Junkie’ show on ITV. He has also moved into the world of radio - currently hosting his own show on BBC‘s 6Music and sometimes filling in for other DJs on Radio 2. He has a new TV show 'Pet Nation' due to start on Sky1 in April 2010.

Frank and Huey have filmed the British gangster/horror film Clubbing to Death, and Huey also recently completed filming for another Brit-flick ‘Souled Out’. Huey has also appeared in the Lawrence Fishburne movie 'Once in the Life' and Irish movie 'Headrush' in which he played a transvestite drug dealer!

All 3 members of the Fun Lovin' Criminals now live over in England. The last few years have been difficult for FLC, as they have been unable to release any new material as they have been tied into a legal dispute with their previous management. Fortunately, for both them and us, this all now seems to have been resolved. Their ongoing popularity, playing live gigs regularly, shows the loyalty of their fans and the quality of music they have produced over the years. FLC are currently in and out of the studio here in the UK, and have now completed their next album (Classic Fantastic) which is set for release on March 1st 2010. The release of the new album, their first since 2005, will be supported by a large tour of the UK and Europe during the months of March and April 2010.

While this is not in any way a definitive biography, such a thing would be nigh on impossible to write given the band’s penchant for embellishment, half-truths and downright falsehoods! However, it gives a flavour of FLC which, knowing them, would probably taste strongly of tequila with a hint of lime – things could be worse!
